Why we need diverse food security actors 🚜
This month, our
in-house writer Julia takes on the complex issue of food security, clarifying everything from what the term actually means to who is helping solve the problem and how.
She covers topics like the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and even interviews a Canadian agronomist.

Meet Michelle Faerstein and Ramou Taal, our two newest Funding & Outreach interns! 👋
Camille: Which Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are you the most passionate about and why?
Michelle: That’s a tough question, especially as all of the SDGs are necessary and are all inexorably interconnected. I’m passionate about the environment and nature, food security, gender equality, education and peace.
Ramou: Zero Hunger, Good Health & Well-Being, and Climate Action. I
feel like I can make the most tangible impact with my mindful sustainable consumption patterns. And my career goals are definitely aligned with all three.
C: What are the attributes of your generation that will help find solutions to the pressing issue your chosen SDGs are aiming to achieve?
M: I think there have been many extraordinary discoveries, developments in knowledge building, movements for positive change, and people in history, and I’d like to believe that every generation has had and has many great things to offer our world, from the discovery and studying of global warming to
movements in social justice and equal rights to life changing medical inventions and more.
I think the 2 attributes my generation can bring to the table are building upon that knowledge, and the profound urgency we feel to address these issues. I don’t believe that any one person or group of people can “save the world” but rather that we must all work together and do our best by each other and the
world.
We all must do what we can, when we can, however we can, to improve the world for every living creature on the planet and for the planet itself.
R: Determination and the will to act fearlessly. These attributes will generate tremendous impact and progress. We're not afraid to show others the truth about what kinds inequities are faced around the world and among marginalized groups, and the need for change/progression. We've seen this
determination and fearlessness yield actual results (policy or institutional change) during social movements like Black Lives Matter, climate strikes, women’s right to education, and many others.
C: What is your favorite part about interning at Stardust Startups?
M: I think my favourite parts are that we aim to improve the world, and the sense of warmth and community that the organization exudes, made possible by our wonderful team. It’s so important to me for the work that I do to be something I’m passionate about and that will make a positive difference in
the world.
Stardust’s focus on funding startups that specifically develop innovations in environmental sustainability, physical and mental health, and education infuse meaning into my working here.
It’s great to be part of a team of people who value the same things, and there is a sense of inclusivity and kindness and positivity in our small workplace community that makes working together a pleasure.
R: I feel like I have an actual hands-on part in the progression of the SDGs that I'm passionate about. And I love working with people who share the same values and goals as I do.
This goes beyond what I have learned about social entrepreneurship in school and I can actually put what I've learned to actual use!
