A fascinating 'shred' of history behind dental care
Dental care has historically been linked to socioeconomic status. People with lower incomes typically don't see tooth or oral health as priority because of its financial implications.
But why is dental care separated from traditional medical care? In the article Why Don't We Treat Teeth like the Rest of our Bodies?, the author explains that before the 1800's, hairdressers and barbers actually served as rudimentary dentists because they had sharp tools and could perform quick surgery on clients (pulling teeth, lancing abscesses, treating wounds, bloodletting, etc.).
Fun fact: That's why barbers have red and white striped poles outside their shops! The colors represent the blood-stained cloths they used, and the caps on each end represent the bowls used to catch everything.
Before anesthesia existed, dental care was not considered as sophis-ticated. Dental studies were not as valued as highly as medical studies so separate dentistry schools were founded, and U.S. policy-makers in the 60's went along with this thinking while creating public health insurance programs.
